Description
The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) at Fermilab is a program of upgrades to the injection complex currently under construction. A major component is a new 2 mA, 800 MeV H- CW-compatible superconducting linac (a.k.a. Linac2), initially operating in a beam pulse mode. Installation of the Warm Front End (WFE) in the Linac2 facility is underway. Beam commissioning is planned to start in summer 2027.
The WFE consists of a 15 mA DC, 30 keV H- ion source, a 2 m-long Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 2.1 MeV CW Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), and a 13 m long Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT), which feeds the beam into the first cryomodule. In this paper, the WFE design is presented along with the rationale behind design choices. Among other Linac2 WFE peculiarities are the two identical sources in a Y-configuration, a partially un-neutralized transport scheme in the LEBT, and a long MEBT that includes a bunch-by-bunch chopping system. Details of their implementation and demonstration at the PIP-II Injector Test (PIP2IT) will be discussed as well as lessons learned. Finally, an up-to-date installation status will be given, highlighting some of the differences between the hardware used at PIP2IT and the final configuration eventually adopted.
