About the Region

Nelson is a small but vibrant city nestled in the Selkirk Mountains along the shores of Kootenay Lake in southeastern BC Canada.

Known as the “Queen City,” Nelson is celebrated for its rich heritage, thriving arts scene, and stunning natural surroundings.

The town boasts over 350 heritage buildings, many beautifully restored from its late 19th and early 20th-century boom during the silver mining era. Its historic Baker Street is a charming hub lined with independent shops, cozy cafés, artisan bakeries, and eclectic boutiques, giving the city an old-world feel with a distinctly bohemian vibe.

Surrounded by towering mountains, lush forests, and the expansive Kootenay Lake, Nelson is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. In the summer, activities like hiking, mountain biking, paddleboarding, and kayaking are popular, while winter brings deep powder and backcountry skiing at nearby Whitewater Ski Resort, famous for its laid-back atmosphere and legendary snow. Check out the Nelson Kootenay Lake tourism page for some interesting activities to do here.
